The Evolution of German Art Song

MONTHLY ON MONDAYS

Art Song is a genre of Western classical chamber music that fuses poetry and music, typically composed for the duo of voice and piano. Soprano and Teaching Artist Ann Moss leads this series of six interactive seminars tracing the evolution of German-language Art Song (or Lieder) from its early development into the mid-20th century.

9/23: Mozart & Beethoven
10/28: Franz Schubert
11/11: Felix & Fanny Mendelssohn
12/9: Clara & Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms
2/24: Gustav & Alma Mahler
3/24: Hugo Wolf & Richard Strauss

Each meeting features roughly thirty minutes of guided listening, framed by contextual background on the composers, poets and musical material, with opportunities for questions and group discussion. Participants are welcome to drop in to individual sessions as desired, or join for all six meetings.

Program including music by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Hensel, Clara & Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

San Francisco Chamber Orchestra's annual celebration of the music of Franz Schubert centers around his famous Trout Quintet, with Karen Shinozaki, Ben Simon, Eugene Sor, Michel Taddei, and rising star Audrey Vardanega. Bay Area favorite Ann Moss will perform Die Forelle (the Art Song upon which the Trout Quintet is based) alongside a selection of beautiful Schubert songs. Let the genius of Schubert carry you away through beautiful performances of some of his best-loved pieces.

PART 14 OF AN ONGOING SERIES

Art Song is a genre of Western classical chamber music that fuses poetry and music, typically composed for the duo of voice and piano. This series of interactive seminars is designed to familiarize participants with the genre of Art Song by highlighting beloved poets such as Blake, Hughes, Verlaine, Dickinson, Goethe, Millay and more – writers whose imagery and insights have inspired composers past and present to set their words to music. Soprano and Teaching Artist Ann Moss leads participants on a listening journey that explores the beautiful marriage of language and melody.


Each meeting features roughly thirty minutes of guided listening, framed by contextual background on the composers, poets and musical material, with opportunities for questions and group discussion. Participants are welcome to drop in to individual sessions as desired, or join for the full series.
